Politicians up for election are well served by having a Twitter or Facebook account, according to a new study, which found the use of social media during an election race can double the amount of votes candidates receive.

It might only be a YouTube ad at the moment seen by around 80,000 but the Occupy Wall Street movement, which has flourished via social media, is working to get an on national TV in the US. It has raised the cash through crowdsourcing with San Francisco-based digital advertising start-up called LoudSauce.

Has Facebook alienated dull brands?

Facebook has always been about driving engagement, the problem they've had over the past few years is that their mechanism for engagement hasn't gone much further than the inflexible 'Like' button, a share, or, if you're lucky, a comment or two. This was great while it lasted, but it did open brands pages up for social media black hat techniques.

Google+ records 40 million users since launch

Google has declared its Google+ social platform an unprecedented success, having attracted 40 million users since it was launched to the public 100 days ago.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s AsiaD conference in Hong Kong, Bradley Horowitz (pictured), VP of product management for Google+, said that the company had received enquiries from 100,000 brands, including Coca-Cola, Nike, Starbucks and BMW, which want to be involved in Google+ to engage with the users. As a result, Google is now preparing to launch a 'brands' page', and 'enterprise support’ for the platform.

Print might be in retreat around the world, but that hasn’t stopped one publisher today launching four monthly magazines with one each devoted to Facebook, Google, LinkedIn and Twitter.

The idea is that the four magazines will serve as manuals for those who understand the importance of social media, but need practical help in developing social media strategies for their businesses. And look London made the front cover of issue one of the Twitter magazine.

Reports this weekend suggest Google could be lining up to buy its one time rival Yahoo!. Google is said to have spoken to at least two private equity firms about a deal to buy Yahoo!, which has been in a state of turmoil since chief executive Carol Bartz was sacked in early September.
