We all need fans and brands need them more than most and building relationships with consumers fosters loyalty. As a result, loyalty has the potential to increase profits, but how do brands get them and how do they keep them?

Has Snickers Gone Nuts? Twitter stunt illustrated how social can be exploited

As news broke of Jordan being recruited to help promote Snickers on Twitter, the Coolpink office was instantly a hive of discussion. We were not only split by the divide of who loves and hates the chocolate bar, but more so on the topic of whether consumers really are stupid enough to fall for this kind of advertising?

Twitter brings LA Fitness to heel after gym chain shamed

Another day and another brand trashes itself online. Yesterday McDonald’s took a beating after its poorly thought out #McDstories when south.

Now it is the turn of gym chain LA Fitness, which has been shamed into dropping £360 in charges it was trying to extract from a pregnant woman whose husband had lost his job. Nice. It took Twitter to descend upon the brand to make it see sense and force it into a deeply embarrassing climb down, which has left its social reputation shredded like so much old gym wear.

The results are in and below is a visual of the Twitter activity for President Obama’s fourth State of the Union speech last night, and his most crucial one in an election year, from his entrance into the House chamber up through Mitch Daniels’ response for the Republican Party.
In all there were three-quarters of a million tweets that specifically mentioned the State of the Union (#SOTU).
And the moment that Twitter saw the highest tweets-per-minute was following the President’s “spilled milk” joke (14,131 TPM):

The way things are at the moment the UK needs all the likes it can get. Luckily we have quite a few, according to a Deloitte study out today. It looks into the economic impact of Facebook across Europe and says Facebook is worth as much as £2.2bn to the UK economy and that the social network supports as many as 35,200 jobs.

McDonalds gets trashed on social media for #mcdstories campaignRemember the Qantas hashtag fail? Of course, you do. The Aussie airline saw the #QantasLuxury Twitter campaign spectacularly backfire late last year.

Now it is the turn of McDonald’s which has also been on the receiving end of a Twitter hashtag fail after it launched promoted tweet campaign that sought to share positive stories about farmers who grow the fast food giant’s food. Sadly for McDonald’s this quickly turned into a major piece of #McFail as it lost ccontrol of the hashtag and off it went.

Social media measurement - the benefits for brands

Social networks have attracted a critical mass of consumers around the globe, so it's only natural that brands are now flocking to social media as a marketing channel. Brands know there is a huge opportunity, but they are unsure of how to measure the results from their social efforts.

Do only models use the Amazon Fire (or Kindles)?

Please someone speak to Amazon about its ads and its use of leggy models and bikini clad babes. Amazon’s latest TV ad for its Kindle Fire tablet features Spanish model Karme Boixadera stretching her long legs in New York City where she apparently finds a package on a doorstep (at this point, we don’t know if its hers, but really who leaves an Amazon package on a doorstep in any city!!).

Samuel Adams to crowdsource next beer for SxSw
@gordonmacmillan
24 January 2012, 10:00AM

Samuel Adams is crowdsourcing a beer. I’m dubious(too many brewers and all of that), but it is an interesting social experiment. But is too much colloboration a bad thing?

Through a Facebook app, you get to choose the colour, clarity, malt, hops and yeast. The crowdsourced beer will then be available in a select few bars in Austin during the South by Southwest Festival in March and at the Sam Adams Boston Brewery.

Immediately after President Obama delivers his State of the Union address tomorrow his team, and a panel of senior advisors, will answer questions from the American public about the speech, which have been submitted under the hashtag #WHchat and on the White House Facebook page.
