Social media is no substitute for journalism, says CNN

We’ve had a few pieces on social media and journalism asking in the first instance if social media was killing it with another post arguing that social media wasn't killing journalism, but rather changing the system.

Most small businesses on Twitter want to be Half Pregnant
Mark Shaw

A pregnant Beyonce who sent Twitter soaring as she announced she was expectingThere is a great saying that you cannot be half pregnant and it is so true. Yet everyday I see small businesses on Twitter doing exactly that. They don't want to properly commit to Twitter, they don't want to put any time or much resource behind their Twitter presence. They sort of think they should be on Twitter because so many others are, but still totally unconvinced its for them, totally unconvinced they can gain any business from it as they truly don't understand it. So what do they do. They sort of set up their account with no real thought. They sort of add a Bio and then they start tweeting a stream of broadcasts which frankly no one is really interested in. But at least someone can go home and say 'we are on Twitter' and Yes we are using it.

LinkedIn will soon be banned in offices

In the world of B2B, there is no doubt that LinkedIn is king. It's a fantastic place to cultivate contacts, develop new ones, show off your business knowledge in a brash self-indulgent way and potentially win new business leads. It's also been a pretty clever way of searching for jobs and it’s a great way for a multitude of recruitment consultants to access your details and contact you for a 'chat'.

Microsoft: Take the Windows Phone challenge

Social media in 2012 will be about engagement over followers and ROI
Victoria Ransom
10 January 2012, 12:50PM

2011 was a landmark year in corporate social media use as business models shifted to reflect the ever-changing social media landscape. With online engagement between customers and businesses growing more prevalent, savvy brands were re-considering their stance on social outreach, and the need to create (and maintain) a delightful social media reputation.

Geeks versus Nerds [infographic]

A wonderful infographic here detailing the difference between geeks and nerds.

You really wouldn’t want to be the nerd in all of this. While the geek has his ironic t-shirts, and interest in film (from high brow to low brow) the nerd is socially inept and introverted and might be into larping (I had to Google this).
