SXSW: Facebook Graph Search: next big thing or next big flop?
11 March 2013, 3:33PM

Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Graph Search launchI honestly can’t work out if Facebook's Graph Search is an interesting experiment or something that could actually change the way we search. During a session at SXSW, I enjoyed the fact that the panel opened by asking the attendees to raise their hands if they had used the tool. About half had. That's half of a room full of people who had come explicitly to hear about Graph Search. The second question was even more telling – how many of those who have used it actually found it useful? Less than half again. Not particularly promising.

Sheryl Sandberg sparks controversy with new book on female leadership
11 March 2013, 2:56PM

Facebook COO and board member Sheryl Sandberg has long been an advocate of a very modern form of feminism. It’s the type of feminism that demands a lot of women, or as Sandberg put its in her new book, encourages them to ‘lean in’ to their careers.

Why you measure Facebook engagement inaccurately
11 March 2013, 11:34AM

Let's be clear: nobody is measuring their social activity effectively. This may seem like a sweeping statement but understand that this claim is based on a five fundamentals:

1. 'Engagement' is subjective.

SXSW: A roundup of Day 1 - Making 3D, searching and finding little bits of joy

The Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin, Texas hosts SXSW each spring. The single biggest thing that people have been talking about is 3D printing. Mail Online is like "journalism crack" says editor Martin Clarke
11 March 2013, 10:12AM

Martin Clarke, publisher of Mail Online, has described the Daily Mail’s all-conquering website as the “crack cocaine” of journalism.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Clarke said people are addicted to it as he talked about the success of the paper that has beaten The New York Times and The Guardian to become the world’s biggest newspaper online.

11 March 2013, 9:22AM

SXSW in Austin TexasLanding in Austin, Texas, you get the feeling everything about this city is dedicated to SXSW. 11 March 2013, 1:16AM

I came across the enclosed advert in Singapore's Today newspaper and couldn't stop laughing

Ikea Singapore have taken the horsemeat scare seriously but they have done it in a very funny way and turned into a sales opportunity as well as a record breaking social engagement.

SXSW: innovation, inspiration and the beauty of contradiction
10 March 2013, 11:41AM

With nearly 30,000 people descending on a few blocks in Austin, Texas, SXSW may have some major problems - mainly the challenge to get into oversubscribed talks and the variable quality of the talks themselves - but with a fair few launches and innovations, being here is like stepping into the future and you can't help but be inspired.

Tweeting from the afterlife
08 March 2013, 12:32PM

This one's a bit creepy, but fascinating too. 'LivesOn' is a new Twitter app, designed to tweet for you after you pass away. (Nice one, Darren)

Launching in March, the service uses Twitter bots powered by algorithms that analyse your online behaviour and learn how you speak. The app can then continues to scout the internet once you've passed away, favouriting tweets and posting the sort of links you like - creating a personal digital afterlife. As the tagline explains: “When your heart stops beating, you’ll keep tweeting.”
