Marchant was chatting on Twitter with some other Labour Tweeters about the possible return of controversial directly elected mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, who quit the party and ran as an independent candidate.

The majority of social media efforts fail due to a ‘provide and pray’ approach rather than one of in-depth planning with only a 10% success rate, according to research from Gartner.

The study found that although 70% of organisations use social technologies, many adopt them without a clear purpose, meaning they fail to deliver any real business value.

Facebook has invited reporters to an event at its headquarters on 4 April, with an invitation that reads, “Come See Our New Home On Android”.

I thought this was a timely moment to repost this piece from the summer where I argued that “the Guardian will eventually have to put up a paywall”.

The case then appeared pretty strong, at least to me, and it seems even stronger now. These past couple of weeks have seen a flurry of paywall announcements both in the US and in the UK. This week alone has been a hugely significant one for UK newspaper with both The Sun saying it will put up a paywall in August and the Telegraph announcing its own plans.
